Our Animals
We have a motley crew of Dogs, Cats, Chickens and Ducks almost all of which have come from rescue homes or have found us in their own way and simply moved in.
We have three dogs who were rescued from sad former lives:
Syrah – a copper coloured ‘silky terrier cross’ is also around the same age. She came from a dogs home in Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. She had been very badly beaten and was in a pitiful condition. She is very protective of what is ‘hers’; she has a basket of toys that she chooses from and she is a top football player (if a bit yappy)
Beaujolais – (Beau) is a black and white collie
about four years old. He was a street dog in Ireland. We were living in County Cork and he was playing catch me if you can, with the traffic. After seeing him nearly being knocked down, Sue took a dog lead when posting a letter at the post office and the rest is history. He had been so ill treated that the vet told us to take down the notices we put up around town to say we had found him, and he spent two days on a drip. Beau is scared of most things, but especially of loud noises. When there is a thunderstorm, he has to take tranquilliser tablets. He is very soft and gentle.
Francy - The baby of the three, she is a Black Labrador cross.
The Cats are - Tiger who lives outside but comes in to eat and have a daytime snooze is sometimes shy but happy to have a chat with our visitors.
Paddy a long haired tabby who has recently come to join us and mostly stays in the house and torments the Dogs as he is only a few months old.
The Chickens ( Myami, Baby D, Grandma Joan, Grandma Sue, Monica and Wilky) and ducks have free range so you may find yourself sharing space from time to time, and they may possibly shout at you if they are hungry. They all like bread – the chickens like it if it is soaked in water first, and the ducks just like it thrown into the pond and then they have to fight the fish for it.
The Ducks in the pond are mainly Mallards; they share their home with a few local wild Moorhens and a very beautiful pair of Pintails called Nip and Tuck.
We also now have a Coypu, Mr Pu who lives in the pond, he is an albino and we think almost deaf and blind, he feeds on the food we give the ducks and chickens. Being a vegetarian he is harmless but is vulnerable to predators so we must look after him.
Your dogs are very welcome but we would ask that they are well behaved with the chickens and ducks etc. We had one very frightened chicken that ended up in the pond when she was chased by a dog – there was no malice in it, the dog was having great fun – but we didn't find her for nearly four hours and she nearly died, we have also had them chased and bought down by visiting dogs on more than one occasion leading to injections of antibiotic being needed.
Scooping-bags are supplied, so if you can pick up as you go, it would be appreciated.
